Our class was working hard the last few weeks to practice making connections to text. We use our schema to make these connections. We know that schema is what we already know in our brains, that means that everyone has different schema. For example, Macie has a lot of schema about horses and Titus knows a lot about dinosaurs.
There are three different kind of connections. One kind is text to self, when you make a connection to something in your life. The next one is text to world, which is when you make a connection to something happening in the world. The last one is text to text, which is when you connect to another book. For example, we read the book "Courage" by Bernard Waber. The cover has a picture of a kid on a diving board. We had a text to self connection because we just finished our swimming lessons. We also had a text to text connection because our latest Judy Blume book is about Sheila taking swimming lessons and she's scared.
Making connections while we read is important because we are becoming better readers. Strong readers use their brains and think about what they're reading. They understand what they read to get information and to make connections from their text. You can make connections with books, newspapers, movies, comics and much more. We are doing an excellent job making connections in 3B!

Students, what connections have you made in your books recently?

Dear 3B,
ReplyDeleteI'm reading a book right now that takes place in the 1700s. They ride horses a lot of places so that makes me think of Macie and her horse. In my book it rains a lot, so that reminds me of living on the West Coast of B.C., where it also rains a lot! It didn't snow much there but winter was pretty rainy. I'd have to wear a rain coat all the time instead of warm winter clothes. It's cold here but I do like it when it's sunny outside.
Thanks for your comments.
