Proactive Recognition Day

Today in 3B we recognized our hard work at becoming more proactive. We are in charge of ourselves and that includes our words and actions.

We watched the movie "Ponyo" today because it was a good example of being proactive.

"Sosuke was caring and being helpful," says Daylene.
"Sosuke's mom said don't judge people by their looks," says Dylan and Teigen.
"When Ponyo's eye kept closing, Sosuke didn't just leave her and made sure she was alive," says Cole.
Teigen says "He was caring for the elderly people and he brought them gifts."
Nolan says "Sosuke cared for Ponyo and he took good care of the fish. When it was running low on water, he made sure he filled it back up. He was responsible."
"They both were helping each other out when the bad guys were attacking," thought Riley L.
Isabelle commented that "when he was filling up Ponyo's water, he was going fast so she stayed alive."

We also handed out awards for proactive behaviour. Students decided what proactive behaviours others were really good at and we made awards for everyone.

Being proactive is the most important habit because it helps you with all the other habits. You have to be in charge of yourself and make the right choices if you want to be a leader.

Zones of Regulation

Zones in 3B

Colours

Blue means that you are really tired, need to go to bed, sad, really hungry, droopy and you don't have much energy. You cannot think very well and need energy (rest, food, or a friend).

"I have felt blue when I'm too tired from staying up late," said Devyn.

Green means you are calm, ready to go, have just enough energy, being proactive, happy, and ready to learn. You thinking properly.

"I feel green when I come to school everyday," said Hannah.

Yellow means when you are almost out of control. Sometimes it happens when you are exercising and huffing and puffing and have lots of energy. Sometimes you are yellow when are excited, acting silly or starting to get frustrated or mad. You need a strategy to come down.

"I feel yellow when my sister bothers me and I get mad," said Riley L.

Red means that you are out of control. You are not thinking properly. Sometimes this is when you are too excited, really mad, grumpy, very hyper, puffed up, or really upset. You are ready to fight, run or freeze. You need to calm down, sometimes you need space and you need to self-regulate.

"I feel red when I feel really mad and can't control myself," said Noah.

Body Signals
Our bodies tell us signals when we feel sad, mad, hungry, tired, happy and lots of other feelings. Some of the signals when we are in the blue zone include crying, droopy heads, shaking, our eyes are closing, our muscles feel tender and we might start yawning. When we are in the red zone, our bodies might get hot, our muscles get tense, we can't think, your cheeks turn red, our eyebrows might be  going up, and your heart beats so fast. These are some of the things your body might do.

Strategies
Some strategies when we are blue and need more energy:

  • go to gym for exercise
  • getting a drink or snacks
  • body breaks (like goNoodle)
  • rest or sleep
  • brain exercise
Some strategies when we are yellow or red and need to come down:
  • chew on something
  • breathing exercises
  • using fidget tools
  • rocking or moving a body part in a rhythm
  • laying down
  • taking a break
  • go for a walk/play
  • watch a video
  • listening to calm music
"When I need energy, I need to have a friend to play with," said Cole.

"I usually have a nap to calm me down," said Jade.

"When I need energy, I usually just talk to my brother, dad or mom because it wakes me up a little bit," said Aaron.

"I eat a healthy snack," said Macie.

Dian said "I need to chew on something when I need to think and when I'm in yellow."

Titus said "I throw something and chase it around when I need energy."

"I watch a movie to calm me when I'm mad," said Ashley.

"I read a book and hold my breath for a few seconds when I'm frustrated or angry," said Jazlynn.

"When I need energy, sometimes I ask my mom to drive me to the skate park," said Teigen.

Rionn said "When I need to calm down, I play with my lego."

Kaitlyn A.R. said "When I need to calm down, I play with my baby sister because she laughs and it makes me laugh too."

"When I'm mad at my sister, I ask my mom to rub my back and it helps me calm down," said Riley W.

Katelynn P. said "When I am mad, I usually go play on my iPad."

Lyric said "When I need more energy, I usually play NHL 14 on my Xbox."

Dylan said "When I need to lose energy, I go for a ride around my block."

Daylene said "When I need to calm down, I usually go downstairs and play with all my lego and build some sets."

"When I am really mad, I will sometimes go talk to my friend or talk to Mrs. Reader," said Noah.

Zane said "I usually go outside when I'm losing energy to get fresh air."

Hannah said "I normally take a walk when I'm really angry at people."

Nolan said "When I'm really upset, my mom and dad let me go into my room and play on my Chromebook for a few hours."

Buildings & Materials in Science

3B is starting a new science unit about buildings and materials! We are very excited about this hands-on unit and started with recording what we already know and what we would like to know. Check out our padlets below.
