September At A Glance

September has been flying by! We've been busy settling into our routines and creating class expectations. Here's a glimpse of what we've been doing:

Math
We have been focusing mainly on ways to show a number up to 1000. This includes place value charts, base 10 blocks, expanded form and written form. 3B also has our Daily 4 Math up and running with choices in Math by Myself (independent math fact games), Math with Technology (practicing current topics on IXL and then Sumdog to review earlier concepts), as well as Math Writing (ways to show a number). Everyone has great stamina and can work on math the whole time to become better mathematicians! Next, we will be working on skip counting.

Reading

We also have Daily 5 for Language Arts in 3B. Right now we have three choices (Read to Self, Work on Writing, and Listen to Reading). As a class we have been reviewing reading behaviours as well as strategies for building our comprehension, accuracy and fluency. The focuses have been on checking our understanding while we read, cross checking (does the word look right? sound right? make sense?) and always picking good-fit books (watch a video here).

Writing
After an unedited personal writing piece about the summer (or birthdays/families/etc.), we have been working to build our stamina for writing the whole time. This means we brainstorm ideas to write about and then work the whole time, adding details and interesting words. We know writing about ourselves and experiences is often a good topic because we know so much about it! 3B has also worked on reviewing capital letters, underlining words that don't look right and using the word wall to help with spelling. The grade threes have also been quite excited about starting cursive handwriting!

Word Work
We've just started looking at short vowel sounds as a whole class. Soon, we will be working on our individual word work for our specific spelling needs.

Social
We learned about our basic rights and responsibilities this month. We know that we all have the right to be happy, to learn and to be safe. After reading books about these ideas, we came up with our own thoughts about how to help ourselves and each other in these areas. Now we have started a small unit on mapping and directions. Check out the compass slide for a fun way to review cardinal directions and enjoy some dancing!

Health
3B has created a class promise about how we'd like to be this year. We brainstormed ideas and agreed upon what we thought was the most important to have a happy, safe class that is ready to learn. We've also been reading stories and discussing the 1st of the 7 Habits, "Be Proactive" and how to be a proactive digital citizen.  Please see our permanent Digital Citizenship blog page for more information.

Physical Education
We share the gym with Mrs. Fesyk's class. She is a great gym teacher with lots of great skill building activities and games!  September's focus has been on gym expectations, being a good sport, building stamina for running long distances (gearing up for Terry Fox), cooperative games, and soccer. 3B has also started swimming lessons at Burman University in Lacombe!  Everyone is learning a lot and it's always hard to get out of the pool at the end.

Assemblies
3B had the opportunity to be leaders at the first welcome back assembly (demonstrating the 7 Habits hand signs) and reading a Terry Fox acrostic poem at the Terry Fox kickoff assembly.

Leprechaun Disaster!!!!

Leprechauns Messed Up Our Room!

Crash! The Lucky Charms crashed off Ms. Badall's desk! There was a huge mess this morning when 3B came in the door. We waited in the hallway for everyone to arrive so we could go into the classroom at the same time. The lights didn't go on right away when we opened the door. We knew something was going on because there were footprints coming from the outside doors to the classroom door. Luck E. seemed to have climbed sideways on the wall and walked up the door to open the handle.

Yesterday we finished our leprechaun traps and put them out to see what would happen. This morning, we came into
the classroom and there were more footprints on the floor and tables! He left itsy-bitsy pencils in some traps and on tables too! He wrote notes on some traps with the pencils.
Luck E. messed up some of our books and put them in the wrong bins! There were special rocks around the room and in traps. We think they might be glow in the dark rocks. He took the coins out of the traps and ate a lot of Lucky Charms!
In one of the traps, he left a boot behind because it got stuck in the glue! In our book bins, Luck E. left glittery shamrock charms. We also have a note on the board that says "Better luck next year." Maybe they are going to come back! All our stacked up chairs were also tipped down and Ms. Badall's carpet chair was backwards. Sneaky Leprechaun! Ms. Badall's keyboard had footprints on the enter key and on the mouse! Maybe he was playing abcya or the Leap's World game he likes! Hopefully he didn't succeed in typing Ms. Badall's password!

Maybe Luck E. brought more leprechauns to help for back up. We think this because he got stuck in some traps and might have needed help. Also, they had so many places to visit in the entire world, that they'd need help eating all the treats and making messes everywhere! This has been a fun St. Patrick's Day so far!

Narnia

At the Narnia play there were four kids Lucy, Edmund, Susan and Peter. There was a professor too, there was also a maid named Ms. Macready.
There was a wardrobe in one of the many rooms in that house. The youngest one Lucy went into the wardrobe to check it out and it was a magical world of unexplored adventure for humans. The others found her story hard to believe. Then Edmund went in the wardrobe and found the same thing that Lucy found and when he got out he lied to them he had never seen that before.

To be continued...

100th Day of School

Today is the 100th day of school. People dressed up as if they were 100 years old. Some people made necklaces out of 100 cheerios, some people actually brought REAL canes! We also had to do our healthy hundred which was 100 seconds of savasana pose. We had a math project and it was called if I had $100 dollars. We would go to websites like Toys r us and fake shop. We would take a screenshot and include the price to add it up after. The way we took a screenshot is we would use an app called awesome screenshot and we would take a screenshot of the thing we wanted and took the section with the app then copied it put it on the page then there you go!

Math And Snowshoeing!

Guess what! We've answered almost 30,000 math questions on IXL! Do you know what IXL is? It is a math website with questions on certain math topics, prizes, and fun! You get medals when you complete all the questions in a section correctly. When you get a question wrong, it bumps you down a couple points but it tells you wh`at to do to get it right. We are having a friendly competition with 3LV to see which class can answer the most math questions this year. We are ahead right now but they are very close! So we need to do even more IXL!

Snowshoes aren't just tennis rackets tied to your feet!  They are actually large metal shoes that have buckles to attach your boot to. They help you stay up on top of the snow (most of the time!). It is hard to learn, but once you get the hang of it, it gets easier. Right now, we are doing a half lap around the school to warm up. Soon we will be playing games outside like freeze tag and soccer! Racing is also tricky because the snowshoes are heavy and you often fall down!  Snowshoeing is fun because we get to fall down, we do it as a class, and you gain strength! At the end, we are always huffing and puffing!
