Hard and Soft G

Hard and Soft G.
By: Dylan and Cole

In 3B we are learning about hard and Soft g. A hard G is when it makes a “g” sound.A Soft g makes a “j” sound. They look the same but they don’t sound the same.We did this project because we wanted to know the difference between a hard g and a soft g. We did it on the whiteboard. It was so much fun. We did not partner up. We did it in our classroom.

Making Connections to Text

Making Connections to Text

Our class was working hard the last few weeks to practice making connections to text. We use our schema to make these connections. We know that schema is what we already know in our brains, that means that everyone has different schema. For example, Macie has a lot of schema about horses and Titus knows a lot about dinosaurs.

There are three different kind of connections. One kind is text to self, when you make a connection to something in your life. The next one is text to world, which is when you make a connection to something happening in the world. The last one is text to text, which is when you connect to another book.  For example, we read the book "Courage" by Bernard Waber. The cover has a picture of a kid on a diving board. We had a text to self connection because we just finished our swimming lessons. We also had a text to text connection because our latest Judy Blume book is about Sheila taking swimming lessons and she's scared.

Making connections while we read is important because we are becoming better readers. Strong readers use their brains and think about what they're reading. They understand what they read to get information and to make connections from their text. You can make connections with books, newspapers, movies, comics and much more.  We are doing an excellent job making connections in 3B!

Students, what connections have you made in your books recently?

What We Learned in Swimming Lessons

For the last several weeks we have been taking swimming lessons at CUC in Lacombe. Yesterday was our last day of swimming. There were three different groups and many different levels.

Lindsay was the first instructor with our new swimmers. They practiced bobs, blowing bubbles under water, back starfish, back glide, front glide, front starfish, front to back starfish, and front to back glide. They also started front and back flutter kicks.

The second group can't remember their instructors name (maybe it was Katelynn?)! But, they remember learning back glide, treading water, starfish, wall dives, pencil dives in the deep end, and sitting dive.

The third group also can't remember their instructor's name but know that they learned how to tread water for 1 minute, to swim the length of the pool 4 times, front crawl, stride dive, sculling, kneeling dive, front and side glide, and back crawl. Some groups did back flips in the water.

Aaron's favourite part about swimming was the free time when he went on the rope and diving board. Teigen agrees with Aaron. Katelynn liked jumping off the racing boards. Zane liked being in the big boats. We get our report cards tomorrow to find out how we did!  Thanks CUC!

End of October Fun in 3B

Wednesday was "Take Me Outside" day and we walked to the Splash Park with all the grade threes. (Thanks for taking pictures, Dylan!) Today we did some pumpkin math, followed by some creative carving.  Check out the fun we've been having in 3B:

At Home Reading

All students in 3B now have a www.raz-kids.com account. They are bringing home a letter with their login information and can access books to read and listen to that are appropriate for their individual reading level. Comprehension quizzes are also included.

Here are some great tips for reading at home from "For The Teachers Blog:"

Halloween Word Cloud

Yesterday in our class we came up with a bunch of Halloween and Fall words and put them into a word cloud in the shape of a hat. We put nouns, adjectives and verbs into a chart in a shared Google Doc first. Then we used the words to make a word cloud using www.tagxedo.com. The most common word was "Zombie" and we know this because it was the largest word in the word cloud.  We know that nouns are a person, place or thing like monsters, vampires and witches. Adjectives are words that describe a noun like grey, gooey, slimy and red. Verbs are action words like crash, float, jog, and jumping. Ms. Badall printed out our word cloud so we could hang it up in our classroom. Happy Halloween, everyone!

Our Class Promise - 3B Tree

Last week we made a class promise to make our class a happier and better place. Our class promise is so we know what we want our class to be.  It's so we know what good things we can do in our class like the 7 Habits. We made name tags to go around it so we know who is in our class and who promised to make it a great place! When we were making it, we saw that it looked like a tree and our names looked like the leaves! That's why we called it the 3B Tree. We want to spread happiness  and smiles in our classroom.

This Just In: Our New 3B Family!

This week we welcomed nine new students to our classroom family. We got new grade three students from all over the school. We have an awesome classroom!

So far we have gone swimming, played football outside with Mr. W, built up our stamina so we can have choice already, used our Chromebooks, made a 3B Tree (our class promise), went to music for the first time as a new class, made great stories in our writing books, worked on IXL and Sumdog, and we all made new friends!

We are excited to have a great year together!

Being Proactive

We think being proactive means...

...being nice to each other, being responsible and having a good attitude. It also means respecting others and doing the right thing even when no one is looking. For example, helping a friend up when a supervisor isn't there. We need to control our own actions.  Online, it means to be honest and safe. Remember to listen to your gut when something feels wrong. Always choose appropriate things to do on the computer and devices. Listen to your parents when they ask you to stay away from some websites. Follow the golden rule: treat others the way you want to be treated. Always post nice, positive things. Only use your own account and protect your privacy and password. Remember that not everything is true on the internet.

Here's a link to more information and a video about being proactive.
